Cruising the Kruger

Kruger National Park
December 4th, 2008

Driving with the air con pumping we still felt the intense heat. 37 degrees. Very. Hot. Our next destination was Shingwedzi, a camp in the Northern Kruger, which happens to have a swimming pool. Yes, an icy cold swimming pool. Steadily chugging along Karel decided we needed to get to the pool faster, and faster we went. We went around a bend in the road and low and behold there was a park ranger with a radar gun. Pulling over the gentleman informed us we were going 79kms in a 50kms zone. Karel, being a bit of a sweet talker said “Oh, I’m sorry. Our car is marked in miles. I thought it was 50 miles (which conveniently happens to be about 80kms)”. The ranger peered through the window and looked at our gage. Laughing he said “it’s marked in kms too”. Chatting with the man we later left with a 250 rand fine. Karel’s formula one ambitions will have to be appreciated in a different context.
